A Ship Graveyard, Presqu'ile Provincial Park

This photo is of a kiosk located just east of the lighthouse. The text reads, "A Ship Graveyard. When a November gale blows from the northwest, off Presqu'ile in a sailing ship is no place to be. Presqu'ile promises the only natural harbour between Toronto and Prince Edward County but the channel to safety is very narrow and nearly impossible to sail upwind into. As well, some say that the wind funnelling through the mouth to the Bay can reach twice the speed of that on the open water. / In the last half of the 1880s alone, at least eight vessels were claimed by autumn storms, within sight of this point. Their scattered remains litter the lake bottom, preserved as a vivid reminder of the hazards of that great age of sail." The underwater photo (credit: Save Our Shipwrecks) at the bottom left reads, "The Ida Walker lies broken and scattered in 10'-12' feet of water. This two-mast schooner was loading barley in nearby Weller's Bay during a late November storm. Swept out of the bay with the anchor dragging, she floundered. All crew were saved in the first ever rescue invovling the famous Dobbins surfboat." The map at the bottom right marks eight approximate wreck locations: Kentucky 1851, Edith 1854, John A. McDonald 1872, Minnie 1877, Trenton 1879, Belle Sheridan 1880, Garibladi 1880, Ida Walker 1886. Photo looking south.
