| | Pioneer and Newcastle Trails, Presqu'ile Provincial Park This photo is of the information kiosk for the Pioneer and Newcastle Trails. The text reads, "Pioneer and Newcastle Trails. The Pioneer and Newcastle Trails lead you through the forests, plantations and old fields found in the heart of the Presqu'ile peninsula. Along these trails you will encounter a diversity of plant and animal life in the mature beech-maple forest, old fields and early succession forest which dominate this area of the park. / In the early 1800s, some of the forest was cleared for the development of the proposed town of Newcastle. When plans for the town were abandoned, settlers built homes and farms on the peninsula. These in turn were abandoned over the next 150 years. Some of the old fields were reforested with conifer plantations, while in others succession, a natural process that restores the beech-maple forest, is occurring. All these events have contributed to the mosaic of habitats to be experienced along these trails today." Photo looking west-northwest.
